Top Chef on Tour: Kevin Gillespie’s Austria

“It’s one of the world’s most brilliant wine regions.”
Kevin Gillespie, owner/chef of Woodfire Grill

 If you’ve ever wanted to get personal with schnitzel, strudel, goulash and Gemischter Satz, now’s your chance.  Chef Kevin Gillespie will lead 15 travelers on an intimate insiders’ guide to Austria’s distinctive foods and decadent wines March 24 through 31, 2011.  The visit covers the best of Vienna, the Wachu Valley, Burgenland and Budapest
Quick highlights include:
Private vineyard tastings and dinner at a Heuriger, a intimate tavern where wine-growers serve the year’s best;
Hands-on apple strudel expertise as taught in the Imperial Court Bakery at Schoenbrunn Palace;
Exploration in a 300-year old wine cellar and the baroque location of “Kellerscholoessl;”
Tasting goulash at a fire pit in Budapest;
And of course sipping Gruner Veltliner, Riesling, Pino Blanc, Chardonnay and the previously mentioned signature white field blend, Gemischter Satz, not to mention quality reds.
The trip is organized through Travel by Design’s Tammy Zacks, who says Gillespie chose this destination because he wants to educate people about Austrian wine.
“I think this is one of the world’s most brilliant wine regions,” Gillespie says. “There is so much to see and experience — from the tradition of the Heuriger to the authentic coffee house culture, to the traditional culinary artisans.”
Cost per person is $4900 based on double occupancy. Spaces are limited to 15 guests. For a complete itinerary and further info contact tammy@travelbydesigninc.com.
